After just few years of battling the high-intensity chaos of a major Hollywood recording studio, Tip Wyman realized what he needed to do to make it long term in the industry. He quit his job and went indie, to form what he calls his “quiet sanctuary,” Wyman Records Studio.

Dropping out of a major studio scene is pretty unusual for someone with the goal to make it in the recording industry, but Tip’s reasoning was that, “you get to the top of it pretty quickly. Then if you want to survive and make money, you better find an alternative. So that’s what I did.” Six months later, Wyman Records is one of the top recording studios in Los Angeles. Its clients include high profile artists like Kanye West, Paris Hilton, and Three 6 Mafia, whose 2005 Academy Award winning track, "It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp," was recorded and mixed by Tip and his in house engineer, Jeff Kanan.

Tip’s goal always was to work in the music industry. Lucky for him, he also knew how to go about it. “I knew that I would have to get the education if I wanted to actually make a career in the music business,” he says. After graduating from Full Sail’s recording arts program in 2003, he landed an internship at the prestigious Westlake Studios in L.A., where he eventually worked his way up to assistant engineer for their many A-list clients. “At Westlake, I worked with everybody. Its just the way the industry works,” he says. Many questioned Tip’s departure from Westlake, but he had his sights set on something different.

Breaking away from the trend of L.A.’s mega-studios, Tip founded Wyman Records on the principle that its low-key location would better accommodate high profile clients. “It’s private, like a sanctuary. It makes you get away and be totally dedicated to whatever your project is,” he explains. “Major studios have ten thousand people working there, running around, going in and out. It’s distracting.” To help clients relax and focus, Tip instead focuses on a calm, soothing atmosphere complete with wall tapestries, throw pillows, and an outdoor patio.

Not surprisingly, many in the music industry have taken to his modest, relaxed approach. As a certified vendor for Universal, Warner Music Group, Sony BMG, and Capital Records, Wyman Records Studio is competitive with all the major rooms in town. “I currently am Three 6 Mafia’s tracking engineer and also their studio provider, so they almost exclusively use me and my spot, which is fantastic,” Tip says.

His solid relationship with the major record labels and groups like Three 6 Mafia has been the catalyst for bringing other artists, such as Kanye West, into the studio. “Kanye West took home four GRAMMYs® last year, so it's kind of nice to work with a GRAMMY® winning artist,” Tip says.

A shining moment in Tip’s career was in 2006 when Three 6 Mafia’s track "It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp" earned an Academy Award for Best Original Song, in the film Hustle and Flow. “It’s amazing to me, it just kind of gives me chills,” Tip remembers. “There was only one Academy Award given out last year [for a single], and I got to be a part of that.”

With all of their success in the studio game, Tip has thrown his cards down once again, and Wyman Records is on its way to becoming it’s own record label. Still in the early stages of development, the label, “is kind of my baby right now,” Tip discloses. “The studio is dedicated to our artists and the label’s efforts, providing the environment for production. Dynamically, its’ just been blowing up.”

“In half a year it’s amazing how many people have been drawn to our studio,” Tip says. Wyman Records has been growing and expanding, but according to Tip, has yet to reach its zenith. “I’m never satisfied,” he states bluntly. “I’m always very appreciative and respectful of what I’ve been able to do and accomplish, however, the sky’s the limit and I’m not retiring any time soon. Its always a good time, I enjoy going to work no matter what time of the day or how long I stay. It’s just a great experience.”
